Another weekend is almost here! I just finished updating my list of family friendly events and activities. There are a couple of library programs to choose from, a Korean Festival in Kapiolani Park, hula to watch and live music to enjoy. Visit my Weekend Events Page for all of the details on these fun things to do.
As always, if I missed a fun event you know about, please share it with everyone as a comment on this post. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Mountain Magic Shave Ice in Waikele
Awhile back some friends and I were discussing shave ice and someone mentioned their favorite was from a little stand at Waikele. After a morning of shopping at Waikele Outlet Mall with my kids I decided to reward us all with some shave ice. Following my friend's recommendation I headed to the shave ice stand next to Sports Authority.
The shave ice stand was easy to find with its big sign and the crowd of people around it. We waited in line and I was going to get the large size until I saw how big a small was. We got two smalls and it was more than enough for the three of us.
With over 30 flavors to choose from it was hard to decide what to pick, but each kid narrowed it down to three flavors they wanted. We opted out on ice cream in the bottom of the cone and a number of other options and just stuck with basic shave ice.
So how was it? Unlike any shave ice I have had. The ice was super fine and there was not a crunch to it. 'Soft' and 'fluffy' aren't words I would usually use to describe ice, but those were the words that came to mind when we ate this shave ice. A tiny bit more syrup might have been nice, but a little mixing solved that.
If you're in Waikele and need a special treat or a refreshing snack, stop by the Mountain Magic Shave Ice stand and enjoy!
Do it yourself on Oahu
Location: In front of the Sports Authority store in Waikele at 94-809 Lumiania Street, Waipahu, Hawaii
Directions: Take the H1 west heading towards Kapolei. After the H1-H2 merge, take the Waikele/Waipahu exit (exit 7). At the end of the offramp take a right onto Paiwa Street. Take the first right you come to. You'll then see Sports Authority on your right and you can turn into their parking lot.
Hours: I failed to find out the hours of the shave ice stand. Next time I'm there I'll check and update this.
Parking: Free parking. Lots of it.
Facilities: We used the restrooms inside of Sports Authority because obviously this little stand doesn't have their own.

Savers: Thrift Shoppers' Paradise
Some friends who used to live here came back to Hawaii for a visit and Savers was on the top of their list of places to go while they were here. I am not a thrift shopping expert but apparently it's that great of a store.
Savers sells household goods, books, toys, accessories, shoes and lots of clothes. The clothes are well organized by style, size and even color. They have clothing from swimwear to coats and everything in between. It's a great place to shop before a trip to a colder climate. You'll spend less than you would at mainstream stores and you can find winter items year round, not just when retailers decide they are in season.
Savers is also a great place to get children's clothes. It seems that a number of thrift stores no longer carry children's items so I'm glad for a place to not only shop but also donate items my children have outgrown or no longer use.Speaking of donating, the Kalihi Savers supports the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii Foundation and the Waipahu Savers supports the Friends of National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. When you donate items you get a receipt to use for a tax deduction and a coupon for $3 off a purchase of $10 or more. You can call them to find out about a donation pick-up at your home or you can take donations directly to the store.
As far as prices go, keep an eye on the tags because the prices vary from item to item. Some are a great deal, others aren't quite as good. Also take note of the color of the price tag. Each day a certain color of tags are 50% off. Check with an employee or on the bulletin board by the entrance to find the sale color of the day.
On a recent shopping trip I kept track of my purchases. I bought 2 shirts for my daughter, 7 pairs of long pants, 4 shirts and 1 coat for my son, 6 shirts, 3 pairs of shorts and 1 pair of capri pants for myself and, thanks to their good prices and a 20% off coupon I had earned through their punch-card system, I only spent $94.
Happy shopping and happy saving!
